FAQs

We’ll add more FAQs here as we get closer to the event! Be on the lookout for more info.

I've never bikepacked before and am nervous about attending. Will this be appropriate for folks new to bikepacking?

Absolutely. This is a great event for people who are curious about bikepacking, and we will have rides and overnights of various distances. All day rides and overnights are non-competitive and no-drop. All rides will have ride leaders at the front helping show the way, and sweeps riding at the back meaning no one will be left behind or riding by themselves. While all riders are expected to carry their own gear, have bikes in good working order, and carry repair kits, we’ll have plenty of volunteers on hand to help out should you have a mechanical. And we’ll aim to leave plenty of time for rest and snack breaks! Check out the distance and elevations on the overnight ride overviews above to see how they compare to what you’ve ridden before, and reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns!

What type of bike do I need?

If you are planning to stick to the shortest overnight, that will be will mostly be on the Greenbrier River Trail which is mostly a packed gravel trail, so we recommend a minimum of 32mm tires. If you are planning to join the longer gravel overnights, a bike with 40+mm tires and gearing for hills is advised. If you want to explore the Monday Lick Trail network right outside of town, bring a mountain bike.

I don’t have any bikepacking bags? Can I still join an overnight trip?

We have a number of bikepacking bags that we can lend out to participants to try them out for the overnight trips. We will try our best to accommodate everyone, and you can get pretty creative to get out there for just a night! Please indicate on your registration form if you may need to borrow gear and we will follow-up.

Do we need to reserve/pay for a campsite?

Nope! Buying a ticket includes overnight camping in Marlinton at Stillwell Park Friday and Saturday night. For overnights Sunday night, our rides will end at a campgrounds, where we have sites reserved, or at dispersed camping locations we are familiar with.

I can’t make it for all 4 days, can I still come?

Yes, definitely. While we would love to host you for the full weekend. Saturday will be a great day to come for a mix of riding in the morning, and an Expo, workshops, and talks in the afternoon and evening. Or perhaps you are most interested in joining for an overnight from Sunday – Monday.

What if I don't know exactly how long I can attend for yet?

That is ok, you’re welcome to come to the summit anytime Friday or Saturday! For the overnights Sunday to Monday, we will be sending out sign ups once we have the routes confirmed, and recommend committing to an overnight quickly to confirm your spot.

What are the routes?

The routes will be shared closer to the event, but you can get an idea of the overnight lengths on the registration form.
