What’s a Bikepacking Summit?

Our bikepacking summits are all about building a vibrant community, exploring the stunning local landscapes, and making bikepacking accessible to everyone. We’re passionate about creating a grassroots event that brings together bikepackers from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. Whether you’re a newbie eager to learn or a pro looking to connect with fellow enthusiasts, we’ve got something for you. Our carefully planned rides and activities are designed to help you discover and connect with these beautiful landscapes in a meaningful way.

We’ll be posted up at a beautiful basecamp at Maitri Farm Friday and Saturday, with the days filled with workshops, rides, inspiring speakers, and an expo and makers mart — and plenty of time to get to know other each other. And then on Sunday we’ll take off for overnight trips of various levels.

At Bikepacking Roots, we believe in giving back to the trails and landscapes we love. Let’s come together to ride and also contribute to the preservation of these incredible landscapes and support of the rural communities that we ride through, ensuring they remain thriving and accessible for future generations.

The Northeast summit is hosted by Bikepacking Roots in partnership with our local Regional Stewards who are excited to share their backyards and some of their favorite trails with you!

Day two begins with a few miles on backroads, including a short detour through a farm. Once in Millerton riders can opt to head back on the rail trail or take backroads back to the farm.
  • Optional Side Trip: Riders have the option to stay in camp or get back on the bikes and ride a few miles on rail trail up to Bash Bish waterfall, a swimming spot, and a bike shop. Then stop at a deli and grocery store in the town of Copake Falls and ride back to the campsite at Rudd Pond. 10 miles round trip 100% rail trail.

FAQs

We’ll add more FAQs here as we get closer to the event! Be on the lookout for more info.

I've never bikepacked before and am nervous about attending. Will this be appropriate for folks new to bikepacking?

Absolutely. This is a great event for people who are curious about bikepacking, and we will have rides and overnights of various distances. All day rides and overnights are non-competitive and no-drop. All rides will have ride leaders at the front helping show the way, and sweeps riding at the back meaning no one will be left behind or riding by themselves. While all riders are expected to carry their own gear, have bikes in good working order, and carry repair kits, we’ll have plenty of volunteers on hand to help out should you have a mechanical. And we’ll aim to leave plenty of time for rest and snack breaks! Check out the distance and elevations on the overnight ride overviews above to see how they compare to what you’ve ridden before, and reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns!

What type of bike do I need?

If you are planning to stick to the shorter rides, those will mostly be on the Harlem Valley Rail trail which is paved, so any bike you have that you can carry your camping gear on will work. If you are planning to join the medium or longer rides, 38mm or wider would be most comfortable for navigating diverse surfaces, but riders with good bike handling skills could go as low as 32-35mm.

I don’t have any bikepacking bags? Can I still join an overnight trip?

We have a number of bikepacking bags that we can lend out to participants to try them out for the overnight trips. We will try our best to accommodate everyone, and you can get pretty creative to get out there for just a night! Please indicate on your registration form if you may need to borrow gear and we will follow-up.

Do we need to reserve/pay for a campsite?

Nope! Buying a ticket includes overnight camping at the farm Friday and Saturday night. For overnights Sunday night, we already have the campsite reserved, but you need to sign up when you purchase your ticket, as there are a limited number of spots at each campsite. Your ticket to attend the event goes toward covering campground reservation costs.

I can’t make it for all 4 days, can I still come?

Yes, definitely. While we would love to host you for the full weekend, Saturday will be a great day to come for a mix of riding, an Expo, great panel presentations and some social activities. Or perhaps you are most interested in joining for an overnight from Sunday – Monday.

What if I don't know exactly how long I can attend for yet?

That is ok, you’re welcome to come to the summit anytime Friday or Saturday! For the overnights Sunday to Monday, we have a limited number of campsite spots available, so we recommend committing to a campout when you purchase your ticket.

What are the routes?

The routes will be shared closer to the event, but you can see an overview of the overnight routes in the schedule above.

How do I get there?

Our basecamp for Friday through Sunday is at Maitri Farm in Amenia, NY in the Hudson Valley.

Bike: If you are feeling adventurous, ride your bike! We are happy to try to connect riders who may be interested in riding to the event from nearby cities like New York City, Albany, Hartford, Philadelphia and others, and will have some of our Regional Stewards and local bike groups leading a ride or two. Let us know if you want to join a group ride in your registration.

Public Transit:

  • ~4 miles from the Wassaic Metro North Station
  • ~30 miles from the Poughkeepsie Amtrak Station

Driving: If you are driving, we encourage carpooling! Parking is available at the farm. If you’re going on an overnight Sunday – Monday, you can leave your car at the farm.

What is the plan for food for the weekend?

  • We are aiming to have a food vendor for dinner to be available for purchase Saturday evening. We will share details once confirmed. Otherwise, you are responsible for your own food while at the farm.
  • The farm stand at Maitri Farm will be open to grab fresh fruits and veggies (hours to be confirmed).
  • We’ll have simple snacks and non-alcoholic drinks available Friday evening and Saturday.
  • We are working on a coffee vender for Saturday & Sunday morning at the farm – please look out for confirmation.
  • If you are going on an overnight trip, each of the overnights has opportunities along the way to stop for food. Otherwise, please bring whatever food you will need for Sunday – Monday.
