I will be camping at the Elk Flat Campground (site 7) in Cave Lake State Park\, Sept 11-18. I will be camped at Illipah Reservoir Rec Area Sept 18-19. I will go over each day’s plan in the discussion\, but the overview is as follows:\nDay 1\, Sept 11: Arrive in Ely. Ride Iceplant Gravel Loop (pg. 28) 18 miles\, 1465′ elevation. Go to camp.Day 2\, Sept 12: Combine Steptoe Valley Trance (pg. 34) and Charcoal Burners (pg. 32) ~ 50 miles\, 2\,200′ elevation. Find good eats in Ely.Day 3\, Sept 13: Gemstone Gravel with Garnet Hill (pg. 26). This includes a train ride to Ruth! 14.1 miles\, 972′ elevation.Day 4\, Sept 14: Road of Hercules (pg. 41) 52.6 miles\, 3\,013′ elevation.Day 5\, Sept 15: Horse and Cattle Camp Loop (pg. 36) 45.3 miles\, 2\,200′ elevation. 100% gravel! Opportunities to fly fish after.Day 6\, Sept 16: Success Loop (pg. 42) 63.4 miles\, 3\,600′ elevation. We will allow 1 school-size backpack to be carried in our support vehicle to lighten your load. \nAdditional Nights: OOFD has a group site reserved for the Thursday before and the Tuesday after the event that all riders are welcome to stay at for FREE! That way if you want to arrive the night before and/or not drive home after riding 70+ miles on Monday\, you can stay with us at Potowatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay. No meals provided during those additional nights. \nTransportation: You can drive (just under 4 hours from Chicago) and park for the duration of the trip in Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay (this is where we will beginning and ending the ride). There is no charge for parking. Your OOFD guides will help facilitate a carpooling option\, by way of spreadsheet prior to the ride. Registered participants can opt to add their open car-seats\, or transportation-needs into this spreadsheet. Guides will then help connect possible carpooling folks by email to finalize details. \nParking: Sunset Park\, Sturgeon Bay \nPace: 12-15mph \nTrail/Route: Paved road with minimal gravel incorporated. \nAge: Adult Ride (21+) \nTrip Description\nThis is not your average group bike ride. At certain breakpoints and along the way\, our Guides will immerse and educate in the history\, geography\, architecture and the uniquely beautiful natural habitats and ecosystems of Door County. We will incorporate cultural stops to see some of the more interesting sights of Door County. \nWe will learn about the quest for Icelandic-American inventor\, Chester Thordarson to build a Valhalla in America on Rock Island. Jens Jensen\, the landscape architect responsible for such Chicago landmarks as Humboldt and Garfield Parks\, has an intellectual commune and natural retreat called The Clearing which will be a stop along the way. \nNatural highlights include the splendor and glaciated cliffs of Door County looking out onto Green Bay and Lake Michigan. \nWe’ll take a rest day on Washington and Rock Islands allowing us some time to explore the island by bike. See such sites as the Stavkirke\, a Scandinavian church and the Mountain Park Lookout. You’ll have the option to sleep in a cabin (with bathrooms!) or camp in an open field. SUMMARY:Snallygaster 200 Bikepacking Grand Depart in Maryland

This is the first and only ultra-distance bikepacking race/gravel route in western Maryland and Preston County. Registration is available by completing this Google form:  \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe2MfMJk9IqLMXEpLH5bP8h1nF3_pZWiX-MzEbpSL4vG_U2Hw/viewform?usp=sharing \nAnd just what is a Snallygaster\, you ask? Well\, they’re sorta like a modern-day pterodactyl\, but with nasty big pointy teeth. They’re dinosaur-adjacent\, you might say. Or maybe the Snallygaster is a folk tale that German immigrants in western Maryland created to keep their kids in bed. Either way\, Snallygasters clearly live in remote\, beautiful locations around Garrett and Preston Counties\, where they feast on unsuspecting bikepackers and tasty berries when in season. Word has it that they also love Hammer Gels\, though\, so maybe just keep a few extras. \nIn seriousness\, this amazing and difficult route will go through 4 of the 7 state parks in Garrett County\, run the entire length of the Meadow Mtn Trail\, scoot around the rim of the Blackwater Canyon\, visit countless gorgeous and forgotten dirt/gravel roads in Preston County (Hile Run\, Snake Road\, Mount Olivet Road\, Peddler’s Glory) and incredible roads in the north of Garrett County (Blooming Rose Road\, for instance). Best of all\, there are a ton of towns and gas stations along the way for resupply and plenty of places to camp. Not to mention\, you’ll always be within an hour of Oakland\, so if something goes terribly wrong\, getting a ride back to the start won’t be a massive pain in the you-know-what. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
