We will allow 1 school-size backpack to be carried in our support vehicle to lighten your load. \nAdditional Nights: OOFD has a group site reserved for the Thursday before and the Tuesday after the event that all riders are welcome to stay at for FREE! That way if you want to arrive the night before and/or not drive home after riding 70+ miles on Monday\, you can stay with us at Potowatomi State Park in Sturgeon Bay. No meals provided during those additional nights. \nTransportation: You can drive (just under 4 hours from Chicago) and park for the duration of the trip in Sunset Park in Sturgeon Bay (this is where we will beginning and ending the ride). We will incorporate cultural stops to see some of the more interesting sights of Door County. \nWe will learn about the quest for Icelandic-American inventor\, Chester Thordarson to build a Valhalla in America on Rock Island. Jens Jensen\, the landscape architect responsible for such Chicago landmarks as Humboldt and Garfield Parks\, has an intellectual commune and natural retreat called The Clearing which will be a stop along the way. \nNatural highlights include the splendor and glaciated cliffs of Door County looking out onto Green Bay and Lake Michigan. \nWe’ll take a rest day on Washington and Rock Islands allowing us some time to explore the island by bike. This is the first and only ultra-distance bikepacking race/gravel route in western Maryland and Preston County. Registration is available by completing this Google form:  \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe2MfMJk9IqLMXEpLH5bP8h1nF3_pZWiX-MzEbpSL4vG_U2Hw/viewform?usp=sharing \nAnd just what is a Snallygaster\, you ask? Well\, they’re sorta like a modern-day pterodactyl\, but with nasty big pointy teeth. They’re dinosaur-adjacent\, you might say. Or maybe the Snallygaster is a folk tale that German immigrants in western Maryland created to keep their kids in bed. Either way\, Snallygasters clearly live in remote\, beautiful locations around Garrett and Preston Counties\, where they feast on unsuspecting bikepackers and tasty berries when in season. Word has it that they also love Hammer Gels\, though\, so maybe just keep a few extras. \nIn seriousness\, this amazing and difficult route will go through 4 of the 7 state parks in Garrett County\, run the entire length of the Meadow Mtn Trail\, scoot around the rim of the Blackwater Canyon\, visit countless gorgeous and forgotten dirt/gravel roads in Preston County (Hile Run\, Snake Road\, Mount Olivet Road\, Peddler’s Glory) and incredible roads in the north of Garrett County (Blooming Rose Road\, for instance). Best of all\, there are a ton of towns and gas stations along the way for resupply and plenty of places to camp. Not to mention\, you’ll always be within an hour of Oakland\, so if something goes terribly wrong\, getting a ride back to the start won’t be a massive pain in the you-know-what. \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

From there\, we’ll ride 35–40 miles northwest toward Greenfield State Park\, exploring dirt and gravel roads\, doubletrack trails\, and paths less traveled. We’ve reserved a group campsite with a lean-to that will serve as our basecamp for the weekend. \nOn Saturday\, we’ll head out for a 40–45-mile mixed-terrain ride in the surrounding area. The first ~30 miles feature substantial climbing (around 100 ft/mile) before easing out along a rail-trail grade. Afterward\, enjoy a refreshing dip in the lake\, a hearty dinner\, and campfire relaxation back at Greenfield State Park. \nOn Sunday\, we’ll pack up and continue our adventure with another 35–40 miles back to Brookline\, NH. \nOverall\, riders should expect hilly terrain averaging 70–80 ft of elevation gain per mile\, with some segments steeper than others. As with all bikepacking adventures\, also anticipate both pleasant surprises and challenges: varied road surfaces (mud\, chunky gravel\, sandy stretches)\, and the possibility of some hike-a-bike sections. Each campout will be in a different location and somewhere along or close to the Stagecoach 400 route. \nIf you’re new to bikepacking or very experienced\, we have options for almost everyone. \nThis year’s Fall Equinox Campout will starting from the shop and ride to the Sweetwater Summit Campground. \nWe will leave from the shop after closing that Saturday at 3 pm and should get to camp around 5 / 5:30pm with enough light to set up camp. \nSee the complete 2-day route: Click Here \nWhen we get to camp\, you can unload your bike and set up tents\, etc. Once everyone is settled\, there will be optional loops for those needing some more miles. Be sure to bring lights too. \nThe Sweetwater bike park is also right next to the campground\, so it could be fun to go ride some laps there or just relax in camp. Something for everyone! \nThe next morning will be a casual roll-out on an alternative route back to the shop. This route will be slightly longer and end with a possible ferry ride across the bay from Coronado to Downtown. \nSince this campout is in town\, there are lots of ways to get back to the shop. In past years\, we even had people join only for the evening and then ride back home that night. It’s about 20 very mellow\, mostly paved miles. \nThe ride is completely self-supported\, so come prepared. Have a backup plan/support car/exit strategy/etc… if you’re questioning if you can make it or not. Make sure you know your limits and abilities. We want everyone to have fun! \nFood and drink: There is water\, electricity\, restrooms\, and coin showers at the campground. We will bring some snacks and drinks to share\, but you are responsible for bringing your dinner and breakfast.  There will be some places to stop for food/drinks on the way down. The closest stores/restaurants are across the street from the golf course. \nShuttling gear: We will have one vehicle driving\, so if you want us to shuttle any gear or food\, you’re welcome to drop it by the shop BEFORE that Saturday. \n***NOTE: There will not be a support vehicle driving down that afternoon\, so all shuttle gear must be dropped off before closing that Friday*** \nAny questions\, please don’t hesitate to ask! \n***Spots are limited\, so please RSVP so we can have a proper headcount. This will be a 3-day trip traversing around 45-50 miles a day to cover the 124-mile loop and make a shorter last day. We’re picking this time of year as it will be a perfect time to escape the long summer heat of Tucson. Flagstaff this time of year is wonderful with the coming fall in the air\, and usually past the monsoons. \nThis will be a challenging ride with plenty of climbing and rough terrain. \nFor the rougher roads out there\, we recommend Mountain bikes with 2.23″ tires or bigger. The fire roads can be deceivingly rough\, and there will be some singletrack. While this ride can be done on a big\, tired gravel bike\, it does get chunky\, though\, and a front-suspension hard tail is likely the preferred bike of choice for most cyclists. \nThere are also relatively few resupply points for water and none for food. We’ll pass through some cattle and storage tanks\, but there won’t be any stores until we get back to Flagstaff. There will be no reliable water between Mile 53 and 97 (Sunset Crater)\, so we must keep that in mind. \nWe recommend a carrying capacity of a minimum of 6 liters of water. \nWith our 8 am departure time on Friday\, we recommend driving up the night before. The details: Park at @yubaexpeditions in Quincy\, California (leave plenty of room around their shuttles!). \nWe roll out at 9 am sharp\, then crack open the usual magic portal to a beautiful\, dirty\, stinky world where time and capitalism no longer exist. \nThis will be a killer time of year to ride gravel roads through Plumas National Forest\, totaling 40 miles and +3916 feet of climbing over Saturday and Sunday. \nThis will be self-supported dispersed camping at Silver Lake (great swimming!) following Leave No Trace principles\, so bring: food\, sleep system\, a water filter\, and a way to bury your own poop (trowel). As always\, this is a casual open-invite trip. No sag\, and no registration or money required\, but we’ll try to make sure nobody is left behind or stranded. We all wear helmets and ask that you do as well. \nThese rides are at a conversational pace\, and we stick together. If you want to KOM your Strava or impress people by being first up the climb\, don’t bother coming\, as the best of the party is at the back of the pack. \nThe route link is in my bio. Be sure to download it in one form or another for offline navigation before the trip\, as cell service can be nonexistent in this area\, and if something unforeseen happens\, we want you to be able to navigate back to your vehicle safely. The route is designed for first-time bikepackers with low mileage and friendly terrain. \n🐢 We give this trip our Turtle rating as it is less than 25 miles each day\, mostly on graded bikeways and flat coastal roads. \n🐩 The terrain both days gets the Poodle rating because the route is 100% on smooth paved roads. \n🚲Previous bikepacking experience is NOT needed; first-time bikepackers are encouraged! A road bike or gravel bike is ideal for this route. \n🙂This is a guided trip with ride leads and sweeps\, but there is no sag or outside vehicle support on this ride. All campers are responsible for themselves and their decisions. Riders are responsible for ensuring their bikes are tuned-up and ready to ride. \n🌼To create a more accessible registration process\, we introduced a lottery system this year to give more folks a chance to register and help ensure that spots are distributed more equitably. In line with our mission\, we will be prioritizing 50% of our campout lottery spots for BIPOC\, transgender\, and gender expansive riders. Furthermore\, first-time bikepackers will receive additional weight in the lottery selection for this trip. \n🎟️To enter the lottery\, please fill out the form linked in our bio.
