This is a beginner-friendly\, low-mileage bikepacking trip on mostly paved roads and trails. Some hills are involved. If you’re comfortable biking 15 miles on varied terrain\, you should be fine. \nNever bikepacked before? Don’t wait until the last minute! Get a rack and panniers and start gathering your gear at least a week or two in advance. Take several practice rides with your loaded bike. The extra weight will change your balance and how your bike handles. \nA few tips: \n\nPractice starting and stopping with a loaded bike.\nPlan for breaks a little earlier than you normally would.\nDownshift before you stop on a hill so you can get going again more easily.\n\nRegistration \nRegistration is limited to 30 people. Online registration closes Wednesday\, September 9. You may still register by email after that date if space is available. \nFee \nThe suggested fee is $30 per person\, but please feel free to contribute whatever works for your budget. Don’t let the cost keep you from joining us! Your donation supports the RARE (Raptor Advocacy Rehabilitation & Education) program\, the Bike Library\, Johnson County Conservation\, and\, of course\, the port-a-potty. 🙂 \nWhat to Bring \n\nSnacks\, dinner\, and breakfast. We encourage food sharing if you have something small to add to a micro-potluck!\nWater for the ride to Two Horse Farm\nTent and sleeping system\nAmrei has several small 2-person tents available to loan. Don’t let gear be a barrier. Some heavier car-camping gear can travel in the sag wagon\, although space is limited\, so please give us a heads-up in advance. \nCome down to the Bike Library to get your bike ready! Install a rack\, look for panniers\, or get a tune-up. Returning to McCall on Monday afternoon. \nCheck out the route on the Dark Sky Bikepacking website. \nAll of our group rides are non-guided. All people\, all bikes\, all skills are welcome! Having an accurate head count ensures that we can accommodate up to 20 people for group camping. Bike bags are available to borrow through Dark Sky Bikepacking lending library and bikes are available to rent through The Trailhead Bicycles. A week prior to our adventure we will send out an email with a suggested packing list\, weather forecast\, and any updates to our ride plan. The routes are centered around the state capital and are composed of singletrack\, scenic double track\, coastal levees\, and forest roads. \nThere are four routes available. \nThe Tango Original 165 – This route offers many of the same features of the 177 route\, just by passes Aucilla. \nThe Tango 177 – Takes riders on the Eastern Side of the Aucilla River and offers riders options to see some of Florida’s Finest Rapids. \nThe Tango 277 – features all the awesomeness of the 177 route but offers riders a chance to go through Tate’s Hell and Back! \nThe Tango LiTe\, aka the Tango through Hell 230 miles\, is a mostly Gravel Route option for those riders wanting to see this beautiful area and avoid 99% of the singletrack found on the original route. LiTe does not mean easy. \nWhat you are purchasing is the route information. Once you purchase that info\, it is yours to use and ride the route at your leisure. Everyone who purchases the route information will be invited to participate in the kick-off event that marks the official beginning of the Florida Bikepacking season. Route information will be sent on August 1st. Once the information is sent\, no refunds can be offered\, and there is no changing of routes unless you purchase that additional information. In other words\, plenty of time to make up your mind! Again\, what you are purchasing is the information; there is no transfer or refunds after August 1st. \nWe ride this route for enjoyment and appreciation of the beautiful wildlife corridors located in the area. Please indicate your interest in the order questionnaire. Gear use is first-come\, first-served\, but we strive to accommodate all requests. \nResources\, such as trained guides and bikes for youth with disabilities\, are available. Please contact us if you are interested. \nLodging: We will tent camp at the Camp Sullivan campground; a cabin is available in case of inclement weather. \nPace: 7-10 mph. We won’t leave anyone behind. \nTrail/Route: Paved road or trail with minimal crushed-limestone portions. \nAge: All families are welcome! \nRiders with disabilities: Resources\, such as trained guides and bikes for youth with disabilities\, are available. Please contact us if you are interested. \nTrip Description\nExplore the beauty of our extensive forest preserves in the Southwest Burbs! First\, we will ride through the southside neighborhoods of Brainerd\, Beverly\, and Mt. Greenwood\, then hit the Cal Sag Trail\, and then finish on the forest preserve trails. We will take plenty of breaks along the route\, including a picnic stop\, before arriving at Camp Sullivan. \nBecause our rides celebrate this beautiful corner of the earth we call home\, we acknowledge the many people who have lived here before us\, including the Council of the Three Fires–comprised of the Ojibwe\, Odawa\, and Potawatomi Nations–as well as the Miami\, Ho-Chunk\, Menominee\, Sac\, Fox\, Kickapoo\, and Illinois Nations. OOFD seeks to promote Indigenous perspectives in all we do. This ride is a celebratory expression of this goal. We have much to learn (and unlearn) and hope you will join us on this journey. \nWhat’s Included\n\nCampsite and firewood\nFood: Day 1 dinner\, Day 2 breakfast and lunch\nEducation about our local history and nature\nWelcoming and supportive guides\n\nWhat’s Not Included\n\nFood: Day 1 lunch\nSnacks during the ride to camp\nBowls\, cups\, spoons\, forks – Please bring your own to avoid waste.\n\nAdding a Donation to Your Ticket Price to Support Other Families\nThe majority of the ticket price covers the campsite\, food\, and supplies. OOFD is mostly volunteer-run\, and the guides are all volunteers. Please consider this when checking out. We welcome donations to help keep our ticket prices low and our organization radically inclusive. \nAbout the Guides\nOur guides are part of a community of volunteers that believe in adventure and helping others find adventure right out our front door. They exude a welcoming\, supportive\, and inclusive spirit which are foundational values at OOFD. They have love and appreciation for their home and like sharing knowledge about that home with others\, thus helping the riders to develop a stronger sense of gratitude for our local history and nature. \nThe guides will be set with the route and an extensive script about the area you’ll be riding through with intentionally chosen breakpoints along the way. \nThey are more than someone to follow on the ride. They are trained and will be there to encourage and support you as well as support with mechanicals that may arise. \nTransfer/Refund/Cancellation Policy\nParticipant Cancellation: No Refunds. By registering\, you acknowledge and agree there will not be a refund if you cancel or do not show up for the event. Tickets cannot be resold. \nTransfers: You can transfer three days before the event. You can only transfer to an event in the same calendar year. Fill out this transfer form at least three days before your ride departs\, and we will follow up in a week or less with instructions on how to register for your new event. Contact us if you have any issues. \nOrganizer Cancellation: Full Refund | Nobody wants an event to be canceled. In the rare circumstance the organizer cancels the event at their discretion\, registered participants will receive a full refund. To date\, this organization has canceled minimal events. \nWeather and Rain: We do not cancel an event for rain\, storm\, or any other weather. We ride rain or shine. Chicago weather is typically passing\, if the weather requires\, we will pause the ride and wait in a sheltered space then continue biking. Some of the best views of the lake and greenery on the trails are after a rainstorm. \nRadical Inclusivity and Non-Discrimination Agreement\nThis is included in your registration form. Showing up with a welcoming and inclusive spirit is crucial and expected of everyone that rides with us. \nBike Camping Packing Checklist and Tips\n  \n  \n\nThis event is part of Bikepacking Root’s Community Event Calendar\, where we share bikepacking events across the US and Canada.
