Family Bike Camping in July with Out Our Front Door out of Chicago, IL
July 19, 2024 - July 20, 2024
A Community of Family Bike Campers
Whether riding in the neighborhood or riding in nature and for first-time bike campers to seasoned veterans, this series aims to foster supportive family cycling experiences.
2017 was Out Our Front Door’s first year of family programming, which started with a tour from Chicago to the Illinois Beach State Park. Since then, the organization has led 4-5 family bike camping trips each year, ranging from 15 to 50 riders. The rides are designed to showcase the amazing diversity of routes and destinations that can be reached in less than 30 miles. Pathways to our natural habitats lie right outside our front door.
There is something for everyone: easy to advanced, bike trails, street riding, off-road, and even a mini-tour.
Family Bike Camping and Day Trips
Out Our Front Door wants to help families get out into nature, have fun, and build community. To help kids make that crucial, instinctive connection with nature at a young age. And all while having a fun bike adventure! The rides also are open to families with a member with an adaptive need. OOFD has a fleet of top-of-the-line adaptive tandem bikes to accommodate, as well as trained volunteers to support the families and their members with the adaptive needs on the ride.
Bike Camping Overnight Trip
This is what it’s all about! Loading up the bike, the kids’ bikes, and enough gear for the whole family. And pedaling. Getting out there and having an adventure. Together as a family and together as a bike adventure community. Ride through the woods. Cook over the fire. Sleep under the stars. These are usually 3-day, 2-night rides, with the middle day being set to enjoy the park and bask in its natural beauty. There are often short trips on Day 2 to swimming pools or nature centers.
